Marketing, Marketing, Marketing

I've been diligently at work accumulating Blog Review information, so that when Shut Up launches, I can get as many copies out into the blogosphere as possible.

It'll certainly be easier this time, seen as how the paperback of  Shut Up should be available (I hope) around the same time as the e-book, and many book bloggers still prefer physical books (hard cover or paperback) to e-book.

If you reviewed for me previously, and would like to review again, email me at AnneTibbetsAuthor[at]gmail[dot]com and I'll be sure to make you the priority!

Work, work, work, work, work...

It never ends.

What's All the Hub-bub, Bub?

Not that anybody is breathing down my neck, but I feel the need to share some exciting news that's been distracting me from finishing The Beast Reign.

1) Shut Up - A YA contemporary I wrote a few years back has found new life as an upcoming e-book and paperback.  The cover has been designed, the book has been edited, and it's now in the hands of the "professionals" and will be on sale (I hope) in the next month or so.  No exact date yet.  I'll keep you posted.

2) The Beast Call - Given the Smashwords.com Best Selling status a few months back, we've decided to go to paperback with my YA Fantasy novella, complete with new cover design.  VERY EXCITING!  I'm not sure when it'll hit Amazon.com, but within the next month or so.  I'll keep you posted on that as well.

3) The Line -  Is still being submitted to literary agents for a possible pick up on the "traditional" market.  I'll keep you up to date if that pops.

4) The Beast Reign - The first draft is finished (hurray!!) and I will start the editing and rewriting (I hope) tomorrow or next week.  This could take me a few weeks, but at least the process has begun.  I'm hoping to launch this in e-book and paperback like the first book of the series.  You'll be pleased to know I have an outline already for book 3.

Plus, you know, there's my day job, and my kids, and my life...And all the other stuff I do.
But the good news is that I'm moving...And we all know how restless and cranky I get when it appears no progress is being made.

Onward we go!

First Draft Finished!

I went into my cave this morning, made a pot of coffee, had a few slices of cinnamon toast, moved my computer to my favorite spot on the dining room table, and WHAM, BAM, THANK YOU  MA'AM knocked out two thousand words in three hours and finished the first draft of 'The Beast Reign.'

Amen, alleluia!

It's a freaking miracle!

I'm going to enjoy the feeling for today, then I am going to hunker down and edit this thing pronto because wouldn't it be cool if Book 2 could be out by the end of June, 2012?

One of the many joys of e-books, having e-publishing connections, and being the master of my own domain (so to speak) - expediency.

Besides, it's nice to have goals.

To quote "Pretty Woman" - one of my favorite characters, Kit DeLuca:
"You gotta have a goal? Do you have a goal?"
The punchline is, the other hooker answers, "I always wanted to be in the ice capades."

I must confess. Me too.
But lack of any athletic ability and any sort of athletic desire prevented my career as a figure skater.
But I digress...

First Draft done!
First Draft done!
First Draft done!
WOOT! WOOT!

Book 2, Day: I've Lost Count

Only 820 words written, but at the rate my real life is going, I'm lucky if I can find the time, let alone the energy or brain power to get any writing done at all.

I'm closer still to the end.

Only two battle scenes left, and then I can begin the lovely job of editing, which honestly, will be a relief after all this struggle to finish.

I'm debating shutting off my phone, my email, my outside world, and my life for a trip into the writer cave.
It's been so long since I've been there, and I do miss it.

Wish me luck.

Loglines with Jessica Brody

Apparently, I need to post more often because my blog has dropped off the Google List when you Google my name...That's bad.  I want my blog to be the first thing on the list and not a negative review of The Beast Call (the only negative review!) from a Fantasy blog in the UK.

Um, no.

So I'm going to blog tonight even though I'm coming down from a caffeine and adrenaline high, in the hopes it'll be higher up on the Google list.

I got to meet Jessica Brody.  For those of you unfamiliar with her work, she wrote My Life Undecided amongst others, and no joke, has sold about 9 books to varied publishers, so she knows her stuff.

She taught a class about writing loglines, and how to use a logline to create a "Killer High Concept" that sells itself.

Now, I've been to many a writer's event and was a little skeptical.  Most writers events, in my limited experience, is an author explaining how they made it in 'the biz' which usually has little to no helping value to anybody else, since each person gets their break differently, but a writer friend was going, and I thought, 'What the hell. Maybe I'll hear something new.'

I am so very thankful I went!  There is always something new to learn, and I'd forgotten how very exciting, exhilarating and electric it is to be in a writers room.  That's the 1 thing I miss from my TV days, the writers room.  Spitballing ideas, cracking jokes off each other's punch lines, growing and expanding on each other's ideas...So. COOL!

Anyway, the fact I got to spitball with Jessica Brody made all the difference in the world.  She had clear, concise advise on how to improve my book idea using the logline, was smart, funny, etc. etc., and holy buckets I wish I'd taken this class LAST YEAR because it would have been a hill of beans helpful when I was working on The Line.

Ugh.

So there you have it, I have been stewing about a new YA contemporary idea, and while in the room with all these writers I figured out how to make it sell-able.

So. Darn. Cool.

Now I just need to write the thing.

*Sigh*

Invasion

Dear Invading Book Idea,

Please stop tormenting me.  I'm not ready for you.  I am so very close to finishing another book entirely, and I need all my focus on that. I cannot afford to be distracted by your many complications, your many plot twists, your many character arcs and torments.

Please leave me alone.

Give me a week.
Just a week, and I promise I will put words to your anguish.
But I need to finish this other one first.
Please, I'm begging you.

Stop invading my mind.

Sincerely,
Anne

Top 10 Personality Traits Necessary to be a Writer

I sometimes get asked random questions by my daughter's friends about being a writer, or about writing books.
"Where do you get your ideas from?"
"How do you get to be a writer?"
Stuff like that.

Today someone asked me a new question, and I was actually stumped for a second.  Now that I've had a chance to think, I've got my answer ready.

The question was: "What kind of person can be a writer?"
My first thought, was 'anybody!' - but that's not actually true.

So here's my response.

10 Personality Traits Every Writer Should Have

1) You must find people interesting.
 - Ultimately you will be writing about people, so you'd better be able to write about all kinds of people, be them good or bad, boring or interesting. Even if you are writing about fictitious animals, they'll have the personalities of people. If you don't study your subject matter, people, you won't be able to portray them well or fairly.
2) You should love reading.
- If you don't like reading, be it news articles, books, magazines, or poetry - whatever - then you won't be able to stomach all the reading that is involved with writing.  You must read about writing.  You must read other people's work.  You must read your own work over and over again.  If you can't stand reading, find another profession.
3) You should be observant.
- Are you the type of person who notices things other people don't?  If not, if you're just breezing through life and don't really enjoy the details, then perhaps you should be something else.
4) You should be introspective.
- Are you asking yourself WHY you feel the way you do?  Do you often wonder if you'd feel differently if you were in someone else's shoes?  Are you constantly taking note of how some particular event or something someone said made you feel?  And perhaps you are able to articulate that feeling onto paper? If so, then you're on target to be a writer.
5) You should be analytical.
- Not just of yourself, and other people, but of everything.  Take a situation, break it down, roll it over, toss in ideas, dissect it, then write it out.
6) You should have a gift with words.
- You don't have to be GIFTED, but you should be able to put one word in front of the other and have them make some sense.  A good (doesn't have to be great) grasp of the rules of the English language (or whatever language you write in) is extremely important.  If your grammar stinks, your writing will too.  Sorry.  It's the truth.
7) You should have self discipline.
- If you are easily distracted, cannot keep on task, get bored really easily, and find any and every excuse not to sit down and concentrate, then you will not have the fortitude to sit down and write.  Writing is a solitary job.  You do it best when alone.  If you can't get yourself on task, find a job where you have a boss to tell you what to do.
8) You should be able to rewrite.
- Don't "marry" your words.  Be able to throw drafts away, start from scratch, move things around and rethink what you've already planned.  Writing is rewriting.  If you think what you've written is brilliant the first draft, you're wrong.  Writer Rule #1: The first draft ALWAYS stinks.  IT'S A FACT! Deal.
9) Are you able to take criticism?
- If you have the deep and dark desire to argue with people, and tell them they're wrong because they just "didn't get" what you wrote, and you get offended when people don't like what you've written, then you are not going to survive long as a writer.  Writing is a subjective art.  You can't please all the people all of the time.  Think about it: did you like every book you ever read? Well, nobody else does either.
10) Can you stomach rejection?
- Agents, publishers, editors, journals, magazines, contests...You will be rejected a dozen times, times a thousand.  If you are emotionally destroyed every time a rejection letter or email comes your way, or have visions of million dollar sales for every draft you write, you will have a very difficult time in the dog-eat-dog world of submissions. Every single writer, even billion dollar ones, have been rejected a hundred times or more. The trick is, they never gave up.

Can you think of any traits I've missed?
I hope this answers your question Kid Who Stumped Me Today.
Well done.

The Making of Shut Up

I've been back and forth with the artist in designing the cover for SHUT UP.

It's not easy to be objective.

In an effort to keep myself grounded I posted the first rough draft on my personal Facebook page and asked all my friends their opinions, and now I'm kind of sorry I did that.

All their opinions are valid, it's just none of them are teenage girls, my target demographic.  So you kinda have to consider the source when the critiques come pouring in.

Be careful what you ask for.

The one thing it did do, was get me thinking critically instead of emotionally, and that's always a good thing when it comes to business.

Anyway, FRIENDS: thanks to all for your input.
Now I need to stop reading the comments and think like a Managing Editor, not an author.

Though, I have to say, this is such the huge advantage to going e-pub with the company I work for.
Authors customarily have NO SAY in the cover of their own book.
Sometimes, when I'm at work, I can understand why.
However, as the author, it's an incredible feeling being a part of this creative process.

But in the meantime I need to think.
And think.
And think some more.

Hmmm...If I were a teenage girl, how would this cover make me feel?  Would I scroll down to read the descriptive paragraph?  Would the paragraph make me want a sample chapter?  Would the sample chapter make me want to buy the rest of the book?

More updates to come.

It's Official When I Say SHUT UP

Hello bull horns, remember me?

Well, I'm following through on my previous threat and I've bitten the bullet, grabbed the bull by the horns, and tooted my own horn.

Premier Digital Publishing has agreed to e-publish another one of my books!

YAY!

In a few months, SHUT UP, a YA contemporary (excerpts available in this blog!) about a young girl whose family is imploding due to her older sister's teen pregnancy, will hit e-stands everywhere.

NOTE: This is a work of fiction.
Just clarifying.

Now it's off to the numerous people to get ready, and then we are good to go.

This is good news.
And I really needed it today.

Let no one say that wallowing in cookies for lunch never accomplished anything.
What it did do, as failure usually does, is piss me off enough to bite back.

Cookies for Lunch

Nothing can be gained by wallowing in cookies.

Two blows today has sent me to baking.
And though I cannot get specific, let's just say, I have two words of advice for all you fellow writers out there.

#1: Don't read into another person's Tweets.

#2: You are your best advocate.

I have two projects that are in limbo.
I've decided to take the bull by the horns and move ahead with one of them, since it would seem my dreams for this particular project are just that...dreams.
One must move ahead when it becomes apparent your aspirations are unrealized. Now, I don't want to seem pessimistic, and I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, I mean after all, isn't the idiom 'Reach for the stars, but settle for the clouds' meant to encourage us to dream big?
Yes.
NOTE: The word idiom is one letter different from idiot.

But I digress.

Don't dream at the cost of actually moving forward.
Like a shark, if I am not constantly moving forward, I die.
Or, at least, my spirit dies.

Hence, in the interest of moving forward, I am biting the bullet.
Two metaphors...One project.
Is it a bull or a bullet?
Meh.
Either way, I'm moving.
It's just now a question of logistics.

Not a question of when, but of how.

As for the other project that is in limbo, there is little I can do about that at this time until I hear back from two separate sources.  I have no choice but to wait on that one.

The other project, however, is free to press on.
And so I shall.

I know I've been vague, and I know this is probably frustrating to a few of you...Or maybe not, perhaps you are all quite irritated with hearing me blather on about nothing specific.
Oh well.

But I will keep you posted once I have solidified my forward plans.
Wish me luck.

Blog Hop

I am so very, very sorry to all you Blog Hoppers that have stopped by today looking for a giveaway.

I'm afraid my plans for the Hop had to change, as I've just included THE BEAST CALL in the Amazon Exclusive promotion, and I cannot host a giveaway at this time.

My apologies!

Boo@Me
But YAY for Amazon. :)

Fresh Eyes

You see?  There is benefit to taking weeks off from writing and then coming back to your work-in-progress with fresh eyes.

Hel-lo outline problem.

You can't go from battle to battle to battle with nothing in between!

And luckily, I have enough characters, and enough back story, and enough personal conflict to develop, that there is plenty of material to work with.

YAY!

One in-between battle scene written today.
Only 861 words, but you know what?

I'll take it and be glad!

The Beast Call Now Exclusive to Amazon.com

I took the plunge today.  After hearing from multiple independent authors about improved sales after enrolling in Amazon's KDP, or Exclusive to Kindle, promotion, I bit the bullet and am giving it a try.

It's a 90 trial which will start the moment THE BEAST CALL is "approved."

My sincere apologies to all you Nook, Sony eReader, Liberati, and iPads who will now be unable to purchase THE BEAST CALL e-book.

If you'd like to get a dose of Anne Tibbets, I suggest you read THE AMULET CHRONICLES and call it a day. :)
