One Order of Inspiration Please
I love research, because in my mind, research is me getting in the right mood and frame of mind in order to write. And, in order to do this, I get to read, watch specific TV shows and movies, and listen to epic and romantic music.
What's not fun about that?
Today's menu? Disney's "The Prince of Persia." I figured, 'Hey, it's on Netflix! I can stream it and watch it right now, and there's a cool brunette chick and some magic dagger, let's go!' Um, yeah. Not so much. It was only ok, though Jack Gyllanhall's accent was impressive, not to mention his physique, but I was looking for a more medieval inspiration, and this did not supply it. I fast forwarded to the end, and by the way, figured out 'the twist' within the first twenty minutes. Duh!
Ok, then I flipped over to AppleTV and watched previews, because a) I didn't have time to watch a whole other movie and b) who wants to spend $3.99 to watch a movie they've already seen? Not me. Anyways, a handful of previews later, I was shrugging it off as a waste of time and started reading a classic R.A. Salvatore book, 'The Halfling's Gem.' Got about fifty pages in and, yep...You see the pattern here? Got bored because I'd read it before.
Argh! I need inspiration!!
I'm trying to feel it, I really, really am, but I read the first scene of "The Beast Reign" and I'm bored off my chair on the first page.
Not good.
A new first scene is desperately needed, and I was hoping today's "research" would spawn some sort of inspiration, but all it did was turn me into a couch potato and give me one good laugh.
The Laugh:
While watching the preview for 'King Arthur' - A horde of men (Saxons I believe) are invading England and Arthur, Lancelot and Guenevere are standing on a frozen lake watching the invaders advance towards them, swords blazing, screaming for blood...and Lancelot says over his shoulder to Guenevere, "There's a large number of lonely men over there."
Her answer back? Probably the best line in the WHOLE movie!?
"Don't worry, I won't let them touch you."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N6pZX0sDAk
Ahhh, now that's a woman.
And by the way, they totally made Keira Knightley's chest larger for promotional purposes in that poster. Attention movie marketers: She doesn't need the help, she's friggin' gorgeous!
Anyway, out of all that "research" today, that's what I get?
One great line that I can't use?
Oey.
Okay inspiration, I'm ready when you are!
Come out, come out, where ever you are!

Don't Panic!
Don't panic!
That's my mantra today, so I'm sharing it with you.
The truth of the matter is, my kids are finally back in school (yay!!) and I am now able to begin working on "The Beast Reign" the sequel to "The Beast Call" that I started working on last winter, but only got half way through the first draft before things started happening with "The Line" and my job, so I had to back burner it - so to speak.
Well, now there is nothing more to be done on "The Line" other than wait, and "The Beast Call" marketing is running on auto-pilot, and if I sit down and do my job without getting interrupted by children, it doesn't take me more than a few hours.
And that leaves me here, now, staring at my computer screen, caught up, wanting to write, wishing I could write, and not being able to.
But, don't panic!
This happened last year too.
I know how to fix this.
First things first, I must read an incredibly written and awe inspiring Fantasy book to get my High Fantasy juices flowing.
Second, I must rent, watch, or stream a High Fantasy movie, preferably one with plenty of sword-play, to inspire that kick-ass conquer the world feeling I need in order to write about Dray.
Third, I need to listen to 'Two Steps From Hell' - they are THE best means of getting me in the mood for something EPIC. Check them out, you will not be disappointed.
Then, and only then, should I attempt to re-read what I wrote earlier this year. Because I can tell you right now, I tried to read it yesterday, and I know it's a first draft, and first drafts ALWAYS, always, Always, alWays, alwayS stink...I was not in the right frame of mind because I was ready to chuck the whole thing and start from scratch I hated it so much, and I never even got to page twenty.
That being said, "The Beast Call" had three different opening scenes before I found the right one, so seen as how this is "The Beast Reign's" second, I'm not far off target.
So, don't panic!
I'll be back on my game in no time.
I just need to re-calibrate my brain from kid/summer/construction/work from home-mode.
Yeah.
Good luck with that.

Road Blocks
The good news is my agent and I have determined that "The Line" will stay a YA.
I can't tell you enough what a relief that is.
I always felt deep in my bones that it was a YA, and I think, particularly after the release of 'Enclave' by Anne Aguire that the subject matter, and the careful way the heroine's plight is depicted in "The Line," that YA readers will not be completely horrified, much less scarred.
I think they're sophisticated enough to handle it.
My agent agreed.
The other good news is that I've been working for the past two days on the suggested re-writes my agent proposed before my vacation, and despite everything in the universe challenging my time and mental strength, I'm relatively happy with what I've done with it so far.
Still not there.
But a hell of a lot closer than I was before.
In the meantime, I will press on.
And not that I'm counting, but there's only 7 more days until school starts. Well, actually, in 45 minutes from this post it will only be 6 days away.
But as I said...Who's counting?

Sorry. I have a thing against blood sucking stalkers. But that's just me.

12 Days to Freedom!
I'm baaaack! Did you miss me?
For those of you who don't really pay any attention to this blog, and I'm sure there are more than a few million of you who don't, I was out of town on a family vacation.
My family and I went to Post Falls, Idaho for some camping and swimming in the Spokane River. Spent some time with family in the area, and even went to see a Michael Buble concert! And the good news is, my husband was able to stay awake through the whole thing. :)
What that also means, however, is that those rewrites my agent asked for a few weeks ago have not been touched and I have a mountain of mail here at home to contend with, plus a house still under construction (Note to Self: Never re-tile the floors again. Ever!) -- it's a little more than a bit hectic around here.
The good news is I managed to get a teeny tiny bit of work and writing done today while my kids watched Harry Potter 7, Part 1 for the ba-zillionth time, so that's a good thing.
Plus, the countdown to the beginning of school has begun.
12 days.
Just 12 days.
I can last 12 days.
Can't I?
